In certain areas of France ADSL is unavailable. If you live in an area without access to terrestrial Broadband networks or indeed no phone connection at all then this may be the answer. Satellite broadband allows high-speed internet access almost anywhere. There are two types of satellite broadband systems available. Please read the following to decide which is most suited to your needs.

This system receives data directly from the satellite at high speed and uses your telephone line to send information back. The vast majority of private internet users download far more data than they send making this system ideally suited to their needs, as the installation and monthly costs are very reasonable. You will find that websites and large emails download very quickly. The drawback is that when you want to send files or emails you will be constrained to dial-up modem speeds. The download speed is an average of 500kbps over any given month, with burst speeds of up to 1000kbps. The basic package allows you to download 300MB at high-speed. If this is insufficient for your needs you can buy a top-up or move onto a higher package.

• Two-way system

This system not only receives data directly from the satellite but also sends via satellite too. This makes it fast in both directions, so you can send large files or emails much quicker than with a dial-up connection. The system does not require a phone connection at all, leaving you free to make calls whilst using the internet. You should be aware that there is an average 70ms latency (delay) for data to be sent and received. This means that when you use ‘Skype’ for example there will be a noticeable delay in your conversation. However if you are sending or receiving data under normal circumstances this delay makes very little difference. The base package gives speeds of up to 512kbps download and 128kbps upload, and 1GB download and 125MB upload monthly data limit. The fastest package currently available is 2048kbps download and 512kbps upload. The equipment and service are highly specialized and this is reflected in the costs.
